Armeno-Kemetic Calendar and Holidays for the Gregorian Month of December

 

We have made it this far, now comes the darkest time of the year for those in the northern hemisphere. This time can be difficult. Ra was said to be in poor health this time of year. During the long nights, it can be easy to fall under the hypnotic gaze of the Chaos Serpent, and give in to depression and despair. But you mustn’t let it. Sutekh, who is immune to the serpent’s glare, guides his followers through the darkness and isfet during the darkest time of the year. This month is also sacred to Sekhmet, who might be a good Netjeret to reach out to if you need to. 

This is also the time of the year when the monotheists are at their most obnoxious. We  pagans have several alternative holidays to choose from in order to avoid this “Christmas”. I personally have The Birth of Mihr (Armenian God of Light and Truth), Yule, and Moomas to celebrate this month, plus some more holidays preceding that. The Kemetic month of Khiak begins right on December 1st. But because it is only 30 days long while December is 31 days long, this is the last such synchronicity between the Kemetic and Gregorian calendars we are going to see for a while.

Քաղոց Պարխար/December 21 ~ Winter Solstice; the Ten Days of Yule Begin, Celebration of Darkness at its Zenith

Քաղոց Վանատ/December 22 ~ Birth of Mihr, heralding the return of Light; Ra and Sutekh prevail against the Chaos Serpent 

Քաղոց Մանի/December 24 ~ All Jackal’s Eve, sacred to Anpu and Wepwawet 

Քաղոց Ասակ/December 25 ~ Ascension of the Celestial Cow, (aka “Moomas”), a holiday marking when Ra rose to the heavens atop Hathor in Her cow form, after the slaughter of Sekhmet against humanity stopped. The Kemetic Orthodox took this holiday and put it in competition with Christmas, it is now the day that Anpu and Wepwawet load their flying chariot (pulled by flying jackals) with gifts to bring to all the good little Kemetic boys and girls who have lived their lives according to Ma’at in the preceding year.

𓄤 - Favorable

The three glyphs symbolize morning, afternoon and night. “Adverse” is better thought of as chaotic, not necessarily “bad”, while “Favorable” might be thought of as orderly, not necessarily “good”. A nuance most Setians would know well. A few missing entries again this month. I’ve been filling them in as I go along this year thanks to Amentet Neferet. (The 24th and the 31st being adverse makes a lot of sense if I think back on years past).
