The Ancient Egyptian Zodiac

On Wednesday I am helping my wife give a presentation to our local Wiccan group about astrology outside of the Greek zodiac most are familiar with. I’m contributing the ancient Egyptian zodiac.

My birthday, ironically, falls under the sign of Heru. Yes, even though Set is my patron. It says people born under this sign are ambitious and optimistic. Maybe there was a point in my life where I was optimistic, before my disillusionment with our dystopian society, but I don’t feel like it describes me all that well. At the same time though, there are still ways in which I relate to Heru; spending the early part of your life trying to please others and fulfill the ambitions of your parent(s) rather than your own, for instance. Despite my love for the occult, astrology has never really interested me that much because I often don’t relate to whatever sign I’m given. But I could get behind Kemetic astrology. Maybe like I did, you just have to think about what you have in common with the Netjer of your sign, rather than go with what the article or even the Book of Nut says.

Ancient Egyptian Zodiac

The ancient Egyptians had a zodiac that differed substantially from the Greek Zodiac we are all used to. They identified 36 constellations. Every ten days, a different constellation appeared helically on the horizon just before dawn, making it the ruling constellation of the day; when the star Sirius rose before dawn, which they called Sopdet, it was the start of a new year, as this usually signified the flooding of the Nile. Each zodiac sign was governed by a God or Goddess, which helped determine the personality attributes of those born under each sign, as it was assumed whoever was born under a deity’s sign took on the characteristics of that deity. The passage and character of these constellations were recorded in the Book of Nut. Nut was the Goddess of the Sky, and was associated with the Milky Way galaxy as well. The zodiac, when synchronized to the modern Gregorian calendar, was as follows:

January 1-7

Hapi, the intersex God of the Nile. People born under Hapi are logical and practical, but their emotions run deep.

January 8 - 21

Amun-Ra, a synchronization of the Sun God Ra and the Creataor God Amun. People born under Amun-Ra are confident, optimistic, know their strengths and put it toward shaping a better world.
