80s Underground Vol. 4 ~ Experiments with Cassette J-Card Generators

 

I have been sick this past week. I think it might be bronchitis. I’m not diagnosed yet but I went by the color of what I’m coughing up (stop me if this is too much info, lol). It could also be pneumonia too. Woo hoo. I will be seeing a doctor hopefully today. It’s been a week of insomnia, fevers, headaches, and excruciating throat pain due to coughing up my lungs every few minutes. A little bug my son brought home with him from school; he bounced back after a couple days, fortunately, meanwhile a week later and I’m still like the walking dead.  Anyway, being in bed a lot, I’ve been focusing on my mixtape hobby. 

Someone in one of my cassette groups on Facebook was showing off a mixtape he did of obscure 80s music. I was thinking “wow, a kindred spirit, I already have three mixtapes like that”. He went the extra mile by generating a custom j-card, which for those not in the know is the name for those labels on the inside of a cassette case. I decided to be a copycat and make my fourth 80s Underground mixtape using his method. Of course, I’m going to have to wait a while to share it in any cassette groups so I don’t look like a complete copycat of that other person, even though I am. After a bit of searching and checking a few different websites out, I settled on this one. 

Here is the template of the website. You have to be careful switching tabs in your browser because it will lose all your hard work. Best thing to do is type the track listing out in a word document and then copy and paste it in. I looked through lots of pictures of 80s goths for the cover. The one I settled on is a portrait of Rozz Williams, singer of the band Christian Death. I made sure to include at least one song from the band to justify using it. As for the songs, they’re mostly selections from my YouTube playlist The 1980s in Music. I made sure not to pick anything that was already on the other three tapes. To fit the whole track listing on the cover I had to use a small font. The template seems like it was designed for short album cassettes that only have like ten songs, but you can make it work if you shrink the font down and forgo a few unnecessary additions like what type the cassette is. I can’t imagine using a tape any longer than 90 minutes though, unless you have a lot of long songs on there to bring the track listing down. Another thing to think about if you’re going to do this is that your playlist is going to be pretty much set in stone, you can’t decide to record over a song with another song or else you’ll screw up the J-card. With a normal J-card I don’t mind putting little sticker labels over my writing or white-out when I make an edit, but that wouldn’t work with this. You could just print out a whole new J-card, but that would be a pain.

It even let me add Armenian letters. Unicode hieroglyphs work too, I tested it out but I didn’t print the results. That opens up lots of possibilities. You can change the text and background colors too. One of these times I’ll use a black background with red letters. But white worked better with this particular photo.

I will have to marathon these tapes again. Plenty of time for that when I have bronchitis and can’t do much of anything else. I’ll be making some even prettier J-cards once I really get the hang of it. But I don’t think I want to do it for every single mixtape, just special themed ones like this. 

 

Today’s Mixtape: 1984 in Music

 

Way back in 2020, I did a blog post about the CD mix I made of 1984 in Music. A lot of those songs are on this tape too, but in the past 4 years I’ve discovered even more good, obscure 1984-released music.1984 was truly one of the best years of the 1980s for music. It seems like the last year of the first wave of Goth. I don’t know what happened in 1985, but there wasn’t as much good music from that year, at least in my opinion. My series of mix CDs dedicated to years made it all the way to the year 2010. I got stuck on 2011 because it was kind of a bad year for music, truth be told (2007-2012 were hard times for goth music in general, and I spent those years mostly listening to older music). I may still do more, as I can easily find enough songs for the subsequent years, but for now I feel like just making it a playlist, and saving the best songs on these little 1 hour cassettes. For some of the years, it’s a lot easier to make a playlist than trying to dig up 80 minutes of good music per year without repeating any bands. This tape is based on the 1984 section of my playlist The 1980s in Music. So here’s a nice mixture of goth rock, post punk, industrial, early grunge and pop music. The Ghostbusters soundtrack is of course well-represented. I needed to fill a little extra space at the end so I managed to squeeze “Crystal Tears” by Horrible Sexy Vampires on there, the shortest song on the list, by cutting out the intro.

The Year Mixes 1981-2018 ~ A Renewed Commitment to Making Cool Little Mixes No One But Me Will Listen To

    A few years ago, I got the idea to make a CD mix for every year starting with 1981 and going up to the current year, with my favorite songs that were released each year. These are mixes that look beyond the top 40 hits you hear everywhere, to the more obscure, underground music. I’ve discovered a lot of new music doing these mixes (new to me anyway), and I just enjoy them so much I have to blog about it and share them with whoever might care to read about it. I’m currently up to 2009. Most of the fun comes from putting these together, really.

Yes, I missed doing these year mixes that I used to blog about a couple years ago. I just lapsed from it for a while because I got up to 2008, and it was legitimately very difficult to do a mix for 2009. It was just a bad year for music, in my opinion. Not that there weren’t a few good releases that year. You had Alice in Chains’ comeback album Black Gives Way to Blue, you had Velvet Acid Christ, Depeche Mode, Deathstars. But I don’t know. I think the goth scene was kind of dead during those years (undead) because emo took over and the ravers dominated the former goth dance clubs that hadn’t already disappeared, and that’s why there wasn’t a lot of music out that matched my tastes. But it came back in a big way in the 2010s. I don’t know how hard doing the year 2010 is going to be, but I hope it’s easier. Anyway, I am updating the whole list because I have had more time to discover new music, and to correct a few errors in the original mixes.

Here are the rules. The song has to have been released in some form that year either on an album, as a single or on a demo, only one song per album (there are moments where a band releases more than one album in a year, this is the rare time where two songs from the same artist are allowed within a year), and most importantly, I have to like it. I am starting with 1981, because I don’t like a lot of music from before then, with the exception of 1930s big band jazz, some more experimental songs from the 1960s, and Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, and early punk music from the 70s, among a few others. I made a mix about the 1970s once, refer to that if you wish to know what I do like from that decade. The year 1980 was basically still the 70s, I didn’t find enough songs I liked that year for a complete mix CD. Another rule is that I can’t do a mix of a recent year; four years minimum have to have passed before I have had enough time to listen to enough of the songs of a certain year. I’m always discovering new music, that’s why these mixes had to be updated. This year I could do 2018, next year I can do 2019. 

If a song and band doesn’t appear here, I either forgot about it, haven’t heard it before, I liked another song by the same band better, I have neutral feelings toward it, or I dislike it. But if anyone wants to appeal any omissions from the list I’ll happily hear your case. Now I was originally doing these as mix CDs. I will still be making physical mixes for myself, but they will be incomplete due to the time limit of 80 minutes per disc. I am soon going to put the complete playlist on YouTube for everyone to hear if they so wish. I am not using Spotify because I’m already paying for YouTube Premium and I can’t stand ads, and Spotify doesn’t have as big of a selection anyway. A lot of the songs I like aren’t on there because they’re obscure. Building this playlist has been a long, arduous process, and in hindsight I kind of wish I had divided it into decades or something because editing it is a really annoying process where YouTube keeps freezing and sending me back to the beginning every time I move a video further down, but by the time I had that idea I was already up to 2006. Maybe I will do it later.

Now just because these rely on my unique taste in music doesn’t mean it doesn’t cover a wide variety of genres. You’ll hear some pop, alternative rock, metal, post-punk, coldwave, grunge, industrial, new wave, nu-metal, and more. By the time we get to the 21st century it’s mostly either goth music or metal, as I stopped liking most mainstream music after the early 2000s. But I can almost guarantee you’ll have heard of some of these songs.

This is all a work in progress, and this list is a living document that will be continuously updated. I will keep this blog page updated as developments happen. I won’t share this blog post widely until it is done.
